General Requirements

To be a sponsor you must be 18 years of age or older.


A signed sponsorship agreement between you and the sponsored relative! If necessary, the agreement can commit that you will provide financial support for your relative.

The agreement also states that the person after becoming a permanent resident will make every effort to support herself/himself.

Who Can Be Sponsored?
Common law partner, Spouse, Dependent children, Conjugal partner, Grandparent, Parents, Brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters or grandsons, orphaned, less than 18 years of age and unmarried or in a common-law relationship, and other relatives of any relationship or age, but only under specific conditions can be sponsored.
How To Get Conditional Permanent Residential Status?

Conditional permanent resident status can be granted when an individual receives Canadian sponsorship from their spouse/conjugal partner/common-law partner. The status ensures that the relationship is authentic.

There exist a few conditions in this case:

  • A five-year ban on sponsoring a new partner/spouse
  • A two-year requirement for some couples to live together. (As of April 28, 2017, this condition is removed)
  • 5-Year Ban On Spousal/Partner Sponsorship
Can We Sponsor Our Parents To Become Permanent Residents In Canada?
Yes, you can sponsor your parents or grandparents to become permanent residents in Canada only if you are permanent residents and citizens of Canada. This sponsorship can be held under the FC (family class) immigration program.
How To Apply For Parents/Grandparents Sponsorship Program?
Before applying for the parents or grandparents sponsorship program you must check your eligibility. After that, submit an interest to sponsor form and wait to get the invitation in order to apply. After receiving the invitation, submit your application within the time period of sixty days.
